KoolSpan Key

The KoolSpan Key provides users with a trusted connection to a KoolSpan Lock. Users simply plug the Key into any USB-capable device and, when prompted, enter the user-defined PIN number. The Key’s internal TrustChip™ (Smart Card version) authenticates to the Lock and, in reply, the Lock authenticates to the Key, enabling a secure per-packet 256-bit AES encrypted session. TrustChips have a unique serial number to protect from cloning.

The KoolSpan Key operates in combination with an OS-compatible driver. The driver requires no configuration, as all connection parameters are maintained in the user’s Key.

How It Works

The KoolSpan Key is a two-factor user authentication token that can be used to quickly and easily set up a protected user connection. The KoolSpan Key contains cryptographic hardware and, unlike most other "tokens," the Key supports up to 14 different network connections (i.e., a device can have secure sessions using different encryption and authentication keys with up to 14 different discrete networks).

The KoolSpan Key is a PIN-protected token device. You must enter your PIN number to unlock the token. If your token is lost or stolen, no problem, it’s not operable without the PIN. If the PIN number isn't entered correctly after repeated attempts (number of permitted attempts is administrator determined), the KoolSpan Key is disabled from further use until reactivated by the administrator.

The KoolSpan Key contains no battery or display, which are prone to break. It does not "expire." There is virtually nothing to wear out in the KoolSpan Key.

All of the crypto parameters for secure connections are maintained securely in the Key’s Smart Card. User network authentication Keys are entirely secure within the Smart Card. In fact, there is no way to read the secret user Keys, and they are never transmitted or exchanged across the network. If they can't be read, they can't be hacked!

If the Key is not inserted, the client driver has no effect, and normal operation continues. If the Key is inserted, the client driver will ask for the user's PIN to unlock the Key.
